Over at EmpireChronicles, Sten has set up a comparison chart between the popular iPhone and the upcoming Xperia X2. Sten has drawn up the chart based on known facts of each phone.
First he starts off with the size and weight of the phones. While the Xperia X2 is smaller in most aspects, it is slightly thicker and 20g heavier. The iPhone wins with weight but not size. The iPhone also wins when it comes to storage as it’s available in 16GB or 32GB options, where as the Xperia X2 will come with 4GB external memory, which can be upgraded, but adds extra cost to it.
One of the advantages of the iPhone being slightly bigger, is that it features a 3.5 inch touch display compared to the Xperia X2’s 3.2 inch display. The X2 makes up for this in resolution though, coming in at 800×480 instead of 480×320. The Xperia X2 also wins when it comes to the camera as it features an improved 8 megapixel camera.
When it comes to the keyboard and OS, both are a matter of opinion and taste. Sten personally prefers a real keyboard instead of an onscreen keyboard, so the X2 gets his vote there. With regards to OS, the iPhone runs iPhone OS 3.0 and Xperia X2 uses Windows Mobile 6.5, both great in their own respect, it’s no surprize he’s listed that part as a tie, but for others it’ll be down to preference. Connectivity is also a tie as both handsets feature 3G, bluetooth, WiFi and GPS.
The Xperia also features a better battery life by more than double, along with more special features, such as TV-Out, Pocket Office, etc.
If these points are enough to steer you towards the X2, it’s noted that the X2 is rumoured to cost more than the iPhone, but sometimes it’s worthy paying more for overall, better features.
A survey has recently been conducted in Korea by Smartphone Now, the only dedicated smartphone news channel in Korea which asked 202 consumers what they thought was the worst smartphone. The Xperia X1 had a bad start in Korea with several complaints, but over all it was a sucessful launch. Based on the survey, 22% of the respondants voted the handset as the worst smartphone available in Korea, where as 18% voted for the HTC touch screen smartphones. While 22% isn’t great, the Xperia X1 from Sony Ericsson fairs much better than the Nokia 6210 smartphone. A resounding 50% of voters chose the 6210 as the worst handset.
The Sony Ericsson Idou phone, has been given an official name by Sony Ericsson today. The codenamed Idou handset will be called Satio. The Satio is due to release in the fourth quarter, featuring a 12 megapixel camera, as well as bringing Walkman and Cyber Shot handsets into one phone. Satio is one of the Symbian handsets they’re working on and will run the 5th Edition S60 OS. Also included is a touchscreen, GPS and Wifi. Along with the Satio, Sony Ericsson will release two other phones in Q4, the Aino and Yari, which are both to be gaming focused handsets.
Sony have released information on their financial report for the last financial year, 2008-2009. In it Sony admit that due to lack of demand for consumer electronics the company lost $1 Billion as consumers turn to less named brands for a cheaper cost in this economical time. Sony will have to cut costs and look at cheaper ways of producing their products, otherwise they could lose even more this financial year. The main culprit behind Sony’s loss is the PS3, which is expensive to buy compared to the Xbox 360 and Wii, expensive to produce and are losing Sony money. So far in a bid to cut costs, three production plants in Japan have already been shut down.
Sony Ericsson’s upcoming all in one touch screen smartphone, will feature the new S60 Symbian software which Esato have gotten a sneak peak at. The product manager for the Idou demonstrated the media capabilities of the handset. For now, this part of the system is the most stable and resulted in less crashes. Esato have the demonstration on video which you can view below.
The folks over at Mobile Cowboys have attended the Tele-Vision stock market and caught a glimps of the upcoming Entertainment Unlimited phone from Sony Ericsson. We’ve previously posted pictures of the Idou before in it’s standard black version but the Idou model on display is the silver model. From the photos the silver does look more of a bronze color, so hopefully we’ll see some more pictures of it soon in a different light, but for now you can take a look at the snaps of the silver idou after the jump.
Sony Ericsson’s next top phone brings walkman and cybershot phones together in the form of Idou, part of the Entertainment Unlimited series. We’ve previously reported on the specs of the upcoming phone, which include a 12 megapixel camera, GPS, Symbian OS and a 3.5 inch touch screen. Several shots of the Idou have also been captured. The phone previously had a release schedule for the second half of 2009, which has now been confirmed. Steffen Grosch, product mananger for Sony Ericsson Germany has said the phone will be released in October and no later than November.
Over in Germany, HTC have lost a patent violation suit to IPCom GmbH. IPCom are claiming that some UMTS patents found in several of HTC’s phones have been infringed and are wanting HTC to pay license fees for these patents. There is no word on if the HTC developed Xperia X1 also infringes on this patent yet, but with both the G1 and HTC Magic both being named as example phones, there is a chance it could affect the X1 as well. If an agreement between the two companies isn’t arranged, HTC could be forced to stop selling UMTS smartphones in Germany.
While some countries have been able to get hold of Sony Ericcson’s Windows Mobile smartphone, the Xperia X1 for quite some time now, Korean’s haven’t been as lucky. The Xperia X1 will finally launch in Korea next week. The X1 isn’t the only phone not to hit Korea soon after European and US release, the Touch Diamond from HTC only made it’s way to Korea last week and not the newest HTC Diamond either.
The lack of non Korean smartphones is set to change from April when the WiPi restriction ends. While this is good news, it will mean year old smartphones, like the HTC Touch Diamond, should become available. I’m sure many wish this happened sooner though, especially with missing out on such great devices like the X1, for quite some time.
Following on from the information of Sony Ericsson’s upcoming Idou, Ubergizmo who are attending the Mobile World Congress have got up close to the 12.1 megapixel phone. Well as close as you can get through plexiglass anyway.
Ubergizmo have taken several photos of the upcoming device, currently named “Idou” which you can view after the jump.
