Stuff magazine have been lucky enough to spend a little time with Sony Ericsson’s newest upcoming Xperia handset and the review is largely positive for the Android handset however, the reviewer believes that a software update will be needed to get the best out of the handset – the X10 will be released running the older 1.6 (Donut) version of the android software.

One of the most applauded features is the ‘infinity button’ which allows users of the phone to use Mediascape, for easy access to music and media stored online and Timescape on the handset which basically allows the user to perform tasks on social networks and includes an animated 3D tile feature for notifications.

The X10’s 4 inch screen gets a positive mark too, along with it’s potentially fast 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, although again, because of the limitations of the Android 1.6 software, the processor apparently doesn’t perform as well as it could. However, the 8mp camera on the X10 scores highly in the review with the reviewer claiming that the X10 camera is the “Best Android camphone” – even with the lack of Xenon flash on this model.

Score wise the Xperia X10 recieved 4 out of 5 stars in the review, almost perfect and with a few tweaks to the software along the road by Sony Ericsson, the perfect Android handset could be within their grasp it seems.

The company initially put the release date out as March 16th but, shortly after this was changed to May 24th. A May 24th release date certainly seems more realistic than the original March 16th date and hopefully it won’t change again.

The X10 Mini, is available to pre-order for £299.99. Where as the X10 Mini Pro, which features a slide out QWERTY keyboard, you’ll be paying £40 more for the keyboard, with it retailing at £339.99.

Sony Ericsson recently announced the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro, which complete the X10 range. Again, O2 have yet to confirm this and unlike the X10, they haven’t been spotted on the O2 website yet. If the X10 Mini and Mini Pro are indeed coming to O2 though, it’s very likely Vodafone will be offering the full range of X10 handsets as well. We’ll keep you posted on further updates.

The X10 has previously been spotted on the O2 website by coolsmartphone when the model appeared in the accessories section of the site and now the X10 has appeared on the O2 ‘smartphone hub‘ page, in image form at least but, with UK carrier Vodafone already due to offer the X10, these little teasers from O2 are giving the impression that the android handset will indeed be available on O2 in the UK.

Microsoft have updated the Windows Marketplace, found on the Xperia X1 and other Windows Mobile handsets. The update, allows users to save apps to the memory card, instead of just the phone memory. Which, for those with large memory cards and are running out of phone memory, is great news.

You can also purchase full versions of apps from the trial editions. Another change, is a new feature called World View. World View allows you to view what apps are available outside of your country but, it’s more likely that you’ll find more apps in a foreign language, than any must have apps. VoIP calls now now also be made over a mobile internet connection and not just WiFi. Although some carriers may have their own block on this.

For avid Facebooker’s, here’s some good news from Microsoft. Version 1.2 of Facebook for Windows Mobile has been updated. There are two new main features, which most would agree are long overdue. You can now like a post as well as add to the comments. The Facebook app can be updated from the Marketplace. Also if your marketplace app has been updated within the last week, you now have the choice to install the Facebook app to your memory card instead of the inbuilt phone memory. Currently, it’s only available from the US marketplace but, other regions should see the update soon.

A source of BoyGeniusReport has stated that the Xperia X10, is definitely headed to AT&T. The earliest we’ll see it is April but, it may possibly be May. It’s very likely that the handset will be $199 but, information on tariff price and length are unknown. There’s also rumors that it could be free on a 2 year contract. However the monthly cost will probably be substantially higher than if paying $199 for it. Hopefully we’ll receive correct tariff and pricing information soon. It’s also rumored that the X10 Mini and Mini Pro are due to be launched around the same time as the Xperia X10.

For those who can’t wait any longer to run Android on an Xperia handset, fear not, a coder over at XDA Developers has ported Android 2.0.1 over to the X1. Like the Ubuntu port, it is limited but, fun to have a go at. Currently the camera, GPS and bluetooth don’t work. GSM and WiFi however do work, along with the screen still responding to touch. Other features apart from those mentioned should also function. You can view how you can port Android to your X1 here, or view the video of Android on the X1 in action below.

While Vodafone may have left the X2 high and dry in the UK, online retailer Play.com had put the Xperia X2 up for pre-order. Originally it was to be released on the 29th of January but, from then onwards for the next few days, the product listed said the handset was out of stock. The page has been updated again, offering the handset up for pre-order. This time the release date is expected to be the 17th of February. with rumors going around that the X2 has been cancelled in the UK altogether, it’ll be interesting to see if Play do ship this handset out, or whether the page will be taken down after the 17th. Hopefully Play will be able to release the handset unlocked to those in the UK who do want the Windows Mobile handset, over the upcoming Android powered X10.
