It’s been said many times, even by Sony Ericsson themselves, that the Xperia X10 will not support multi touch, due to hardware limitations. This has however been questioned many times as well. The handset was previously dubbed as supporting multitouch, right up until the launch and even five months after the initial release of the Xperia X10, Sony Style US listed the Xperia X10 as having a multitouch display. This was however later revoked and it was put down to a typo and for users not to get their hopes up.
Over the past few weeks however, videos have surfaced which, once again questioned the capabilities of multi touch on the Xperia X10. The videos looked rather convincing despite what had been previously claimed. In response to this, the Sony Ericsson blog have said that the Xperia X10 will support multi touch, of sorts. The company are working on releasing an update that will enable pinch to zoom on the X10 which will work in the browser, possibly within MediaScape and within certain third party apps, such as Angry Birds. Not all apps and games will support multi touch though, at least that’s what Sony Ericsson are saying for the mean time. We may find in the future any app that supports multi touch, will also work with multi touch on the X10, whether or not that will be directly through Sony Ericsson or modders however, will remain to be seen until the update is actually released.
Rikard Skogberg has also posted a video of the “prototype software” on his X10, showing off the multi touch, which you can view after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
We’ve heard before, many times in fact, that the Xperia X10 does not support multi touch and is due to the hardware. However we’ve also seen instances where Sony Ericsson have said that the handset does, including the latest incident involving the Sony Style website. Before the US release of the Xperia X10, the US Sony Style site laid claim that the Xperia X10 featured a 4 inch multi touch screen. This was however later retracted.
Because of this, the issue of multi touch on the Xperia X10 still hasn’t been put to rest and now there are several videos that have emerged, which one again question the ability of multi touch on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. In the videos, we see King of Fighters being played on the Xperia X10 and using multi touch, while another video shows of Angry Birds on the handset and the pinch to zoom ability within the game. You can see all the videos demonstrating multi touch on the Xperia X10 after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
A week ago saw the release of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 being released in the US. Since the product page went live, when describing the screen, not only did it give the screen size of the device but, also listed it as being a multi touch screen. We’ve previously posted about various people saying it had multi touch and others saying it didn’t until the Sony Ericsson blog officially stated it didn’t.
With the Sony Style page listing it as being multi touch, a lot of people started questioning whether the X10 did actually have multi touch, or if just the US model had multi touch and whether, this was a genuine error on Sony’s part, of if they were misleading customers. After a week of being on sale, the page has finally been adjusted and no longer lists multi touch. Quite a few blogs on the internet sent emails to them regarding the wording on the specs. We don’t know if any received a reply but, Sony obviously took notice.
The multi touch feature on the Xperia X10, or lack there of has been extensively discussed across the web, from blogs to forums. For a while there was a lot of confusion as to whether Sony Ericsson’s first Android handset, the Xperia X10, featured the multi touch function, which is present in the majority of competing handsets. Sony Ericsson finally confirmed that the Xperia X10, would not get the multi touch feature in a future software, whether an Android update, or a Sony Ericsson update for the phone, as the handset does not have the capable hardware to support multi touch.
In light of this, it seems that Sony US is misleading customers purchasing the Xperia X10. For many, the lack of multi touch has been a major let down and has also put off potential buyers, from purchasing the handset and have took their business to another phone manufacturer. Upon the Sony Style website, in the description of the X10, there’s a section for various features of the handset. In the section where the 4 inch touch screen is being praised, it lists the Xperia X10 has having a 4 inch multi touch screen.
XperiaX10.net have been watching the page since it went live last week and as of yet, the error has not been corrected. They have also contacted Sony but, have received no response yet. Based on what we’ve heard before, it seems likely that this is a typing error on Sony’s part but, it’s sure to leave many owners and potential owners, whether the Xperia X10 will in fact get multi touch, despite previous claims. We’ll keep you updated on whether Sony correct this error or provide an explanation.
We recently learned that unlike it’s big brother the X10, the mini version did have the supported hardware for multi touch screen capabilities. However Timo Maassmann over at the SE Blog has confirmed that the X10 Mini will not support multi touch and neither will the X10 Mini Pro. If it were enabled it would “destroy the simplicity” of using them.
He also goes on to say, that the interface has been designed to make one handed use, as easy as possible. Four corner shortcuts are included in the features of the phone, as well as being able to zoom in and out of photos using your thumb. You can see Sony Ericsson’s official video of the X10 Mini showing how easy it is to use the handset one handed below.
One question which I’m sure has been on many people’s lips and minds, is whether the X10 Minis will support multi touch. With the official word out on the lack of multi touch for the X10, it was quite likely that the X10 Mini and Mini Pro would also not be multi touch compatible. Thanks to SE-Blog though, we can confirm that the Xperia X10 Mini does have the hardware support for multi touch. Synaptics are responsible for the screen on the X10 Mini and it is a ClearPad 2000 solution, which to you and me means it supports multi touch. It’s likely however, that the X10 Mini won’t have the software to support multi touch out of the box and is most likely due in a software update, quite possibly when the Android 2.1 update comes out.
Synaptics have also confirmed that they are not the supplier of the X10 Mini Pro. We’re not sure who the supplier of the screen is for the X10 Mini Pro, so at this moment we can’t confirm whether the Mini Pro will support multi touch.
Following on from the has it, hasn’t it debate, on whether the X10 has multi touch, we now have the final word on it. Harold de Kort, Communication’s Manager for Sony Ericsson has confirmed that the X10, can not support multi touch, due to the original stated reason, the hardware does not support it. A software update will not fix the problem.
Multi-touch will not be a feature in future updates for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 because the device does not support multi-touch due to her software and hardware configuration. The operation and user experience of the phone will be further improved and Sony Ericsson will come with her own intuitive way of, for example, zooming in and out.
It’s also come to light, that the recent video we posted showing “multi touch” on the X10 was indeed a small hack, or rather a glitch. The “multi touch gesture” isn’t registered as one but, is rather done by a double tap. It also appears to only happen on Google Maps, or rather, the old version which has been fixed. [Thanks Jesiel]
It was previously reported that the Xperia X10 would not be getting multi touch due to hardware limitations. However further information revealed that, the X10 would be receiving an update to bring multi touch support around the same time as the Android update hits the X10. A video has now surfaced supposedly showing multi touch in action on the X10. There is a debate on the legitimacy of the video though. Skip to 6:50 in the video to see the multi touch in action.
Despite the X10 previously being dubbed as not being able to support multi touch due to hardware, a source of Mobiles.co.uk has confirmed that multi touch is indeed capable on the Xperia X10. The multi touch support will come in the form of an update, due to be released some time in the second half of 2010, most likely around September. Their source also goes on to say, that the Android update to 2.1 will also be available around the same time. One of the main complaints of the X10 at the moment, is that the OS is outdated and an update would make it a brilliant phone. However by the time September rolls around, Sony Ericsson could still be playing the Android catch up game, with Android 2.2, aka Froyo, most likely released by then.
If you’re looking to pick up the Xperia X10, a recent discovery has left some people rethinking their purchase of the handset. The X10 will get an Android upgrade but, this won’t provide multi touch support, as it’s been revealed that due to the screen hardware, the handset will not be able to offer multi touch. Rikard Skogberg at the Sony Ericsson Blog had been questioned by readers, as to whether the update would bring multi touch support but, unfortunately the answer was no, as it’s due to hardware rather than software. With this in mind, will you still be grabbing the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10?
