It seems like a while since we had Xperia X2 news to share however, apps developer Brosvision have just posted up their new social panel that has been built specifically for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2.
Featuring custom launch icons, status updates, auto feed refresh and 3 colour schemes, the SocialLive panel brings Facebook feeds including videos and photos direct to your X2 handset’s homescreen and is available as a free download from the Brosvision site.
A few weeks back, Sony Ericsson released a firmware update for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2. This update was dubbed the MR1 update, which added video calling support and and FM radio support. At the time, another update, the MR2 was promised which has now been released. Again, this update improves performance of the handset and usability but, the biggest part of the update, is that it brings Windows Mobile 6.5.3 to the X2. To upgrade, you’ll need to use the Sony Ericsson Update Service. If the update isn’t showing, check back in a few hours, as it’s being rolled out throughout various regions at a different speed.
After the recent update for the Xperia X2, Sony Ericsson are widening the handsets audience and will finally be making it’s way to the US. The handset is listed on Sony Style for pre-order for $599.99. It’s due to be released on April 29th. The handset comes unlocked and not tied in to any network contract.
The Xperia X2 features an 8 mega pixel camera, Windows Mobile 6.5, with a 3.2 inch touch screen display. Like the X1 it also features a slide out QWERTY keyboard. The X2 has 512MB on board memory and comes with a 4GB MicroSD card, which can be expanded.
While the X2 can’t really be classed as a success with Vodafone UK giving up on the handset before it even launched and not available through any other vendor. The US hasn’t fared even better for the handset, with it still “missing in action”. Even so, Sony Ericsson have released a major firmware update for the handset. The update brings FM radio support, video calling, SlideView 2.0, which features better usability and a new design. The update also improves the performance and stability of the handset. This update is being referred to as MR1 and there is also talk of an MR2 update coming in May.
The successor to the Xperia X1 is now available to purchase sim free from an online retailer. Wiredia are offering the handset up for $629.99 and is available for shipping immediately. The company also appear to ship the handset worldwide, useful to countries, such as the UK who still haven’t got the option to purchase the Xperia X2. Of course, a huge shipping chrge will be incurred though, with the UK postal price being around $100. While shipping to the US, is between $20 and $40 depending on the shipping service you choose.
While Sony Ericsson and Vodafone might not have much love for the Xperia X2 in the UK, Tracy and Matt are offering up the chance to win an X2 handset. The handset in questioned, was picked up at Mobile World Congress, to be used in the competition. There are three ways you can enter the competition, the first is to become a fan of Tracy and Matt on Facebook, while the second requires you to retweet a Twitter message. Alternatively, they have a competition form set up for forum members. Check out the full details of how to enter here.
While Vodafone may have left the X2 high and dry in the UK, online retailer Play.com had put the Xperia X2 up for pre-order. Originally it was to be released on the 29th of January but, from then onwards for the next few days, the product listed said the handset was out of stock. The page has been updated again, offering the handset up for pre-order. This time the release date is expected to be the 17th of February. with rumors going around that the X2 has been cancelled in the UK altogether, it’ll be interesting to see if Play do ship this handset out, or whether the page will be taken down after the 17th. Hopefully Play will be able to release the handset unlocked to those in the UK who do want the Windows Mobile handset, over the upcoming Android powered X10.
Over at Play.com, you can now pre-order the Xperia X2. They have the release date as January 29th. The handset will cost £499.99 from Play. The Sony Ericsson Store does not have the release date posted but, still says January 2010. Vodafone on the other hand, the page for the X2 is no longer available. Instead a page not found message is displayed.
While it’s been known for a little while now, that the Xperia X2 has been delayed until January, Xperiancers shed light as to why this is. Xperiancers had received some pre-release models and have played around with the handsets. At first, the software on the phone worked fine, but when trying network specific apps, some issues were found. Sony Ericsson are working on fixing these before the handset goes to retail.
It’s all minor tweaks really (extending the battery life and speeding up aspects of the software), but we want to be sure that when we ship this it is as good as it should be and that you don’t have to constantly upgrade the software as we iron out these wrinkles.
So… we’re launching first week of January. Really sorry if you were looking forward to getting hold of one before then but it will be worth it when we get there.
Over at theunwired the lucky folks have received an “acceptance unit” of the Xperia X2. They’ve taken a video showcasing the unboxing of the handset along with showing what is expected to be found in the box. You’ve got the usual accessories in the box of an AC charger, USB cable and a headset. Also included in as AV cable which can connect to audio and video plugs. Unfortunately embedding has been disabled but, you can check out the video here.
