While Vodafone may have left the X2 high and dry in the UK, online retailer Play.com had put the Xperia X2 up for pre-order. Originally it was to be released on the 29th of January but, from then onwards for the next few days, the product listed said the handset was out of stock. The page has been updated again, offering the handset up for pre-order. This time the release date is expected to be the 17th of February. with rumors going around that the X2 has been cancelled in the UK altogether, it’ll be interesting to see if Play do ship this handset out, or whether the page will be taken down after the 17th. Hopefully Play will be able to release the handset unlocked to those in the UK who do want the Windows Mobile handset, over the upcoming Android powered X10.

sony-ericsson-xperia-x2While it’s been known for a little while now, that the Xperia X2 has been delayed until January, Xperiancers shed light as to why this is. Xperiancers had received some pre-release models and have played around with the handsets. At first, the software on the phone worked fine, but when trying network specific apps, some issues were found. Sony Ericsson are working on fixing these before the handset goes to retail.

It’s all minor tweaks really (extending the battery life and speeding up aspects of the software), but we want to be sure that when we ship this it is as good as it should be and that you don’t have to constantly upgrade the software as we iron out these wrinkles.

So… we’re launching first week of January. Really sorry if you were looking forward to getting hold of one before then but it will be worth it when we get there.

xperia-x2-pre-register

It appears that the UK has varying release dates for the recently announced Xperia X2. UK retailer Expansys, as we’ve previously reported, has the Xperia X2 available for pre-order with an expected release date of January 11th 2010. However on the Official Sony Ericsson Store website, it’s possible to pre-register your interest in the handset, with further information to follow when it becomes available. The site lists the X2 as being released in October. Not only that, but the website says the handset will be exclusive to Vodafone. So if you’re not with Vodafone UK, perhaps it’s time to start thinking about changing when the Xperia X2 is released.

Sony Ericsson have released the official video of the Xperia X2 and published it on their YouTube account. However if this isn’t beefy enough for you, both SE-First and Telefonino have a hands on of the handset. SE-First pretty much only cover the various sides of the handset, giving you a 360 degree look at it along with how the battery cover can be removed.

Telefonino on the other hand have a much more in-depth look at the handset. The video is in Italian but English subtitles have been added which can be viewed by clicking on the arrow under the video and then selecting CC. Not a problem if you understand Italian though. You can view all the videos after the jump.

xperia-x2-white

Over at EmpireChronicles, Sten has set up a comparison chart between the popular iPhone and the upcoming Xperia X2. Sten has drawn up the chart based on known facts of each phone.

First he starts off with the size and weight of the phones. While the Xperia X2 is smaller in most aspects, it is slightly thicker and 20g heavier. The iPhone wins with weight but not size. The iPhone also wins when it comes to storage as it’s available in 16GB or 32GB options, where as the Xperia X2 will come with 4GB external memory, which can be upgraded, but adds extra cost to it.

One of the advantages of the iPhone being slightly bigger, is that it features a 3.5 inch touch display compared to the Xperia X2’s 3.2 inch display. The X2 makes up for this in resolution though, coming in at 800×480 instead of 480×320. The Xperia X2 also wins when it comes to the camera as it features an improved 8 megapixel camera.

When it comes to the keyboard and OS, both are a matter of opinion and taste. Sten personally prefers a real keyboard instead of an onscreen keyboard, so the X2 gets his vote there. With regards to OS, the iPhone runs iPhone OS 3.0 and Xperia X2 uses Windows Mobile 6.5, both great in their own respect, it’s no surprize he’s listed that part as a tie, but for others it’ll be down to preference. Connectivity is also a tie as both handsets feature 3G, bluetooth, WiFi and GPS.

The Xperia also features a better battery life by more than double, along with more special features, such as TV-Out, Pocket Office, etc.

If these points are enough to steer you towards the X2, it’s noted that the X2 is rumoured to cost more than the iPhone, but sometimes it’s worthy paying more for overall, better features.

Only hours after the official announcement from Sony Ericsson and Engadget have had the privilege of receiving a hands on with the phone. Many questions about the handset are asked. In the video below, it’s confirmed that the touch screen is resistive and to go into landscape mode on the home screen, there is no accelerometer for that, but rather the QWERTY keyboard needs to be slid open.

There’s a button for “snacking” information, which is best viewed in portrait mode for more information on the screen. Engadget describe the homescreen as flashy but gimmicky. In the model demoed, it is still a production model, so the UI has a few bits of lag in it and Windows Mobile 6.5 is described as not being all it could be by Sony Ericsson. You can view the video along with several photos of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 after the jump.

The handset is due for release in Q4 to selected markets. The handset, along with featuring Windows Mobile 6.5, will also feature 13 pre loaded panels. A 4GB  microSD will also be included in the box. No specific price region has been set for the X2, but it’s also been confirmed that the X2 will be available in both black and silver, like the X1.

xperia-x2

Sony Ericsson will be a holding a press conference sometime next week, where they will be announcing one device. Rumours are that the device they will announce, is the successor to the Xperia X1, Sony Ericsson’s first Windows Mobile smartphone. The X2 will hopefully be officially announced this time round, unlike the possible announcement back in June. The X2, codenamed Vulcan features Windows Mobile also, but with a bigger touch screen at 3.5 inches. The camera is also improved on the X2, up to a respectable 8.1mp.
