For those of you who are still in a contract with O2 after taking out Sony Ericsson’s 2010 flagship handset, the Xperia X10 here’s some good news. O2 have finally released the Android 2.3 update for the Xperia X10 which, has been out for a little while now on unbranded X10 handsets and even other network branded handsets. O2 UK are the last network to provide the update to their customers as even O2 Ireland and O2 Germany provided the update as early as August. According to a blog post over on O2 the delay is because they found the update caused problems with the phone’s camera. They have however been working with Sony Ericsson to resolve this issue and it is now fixed.

Despite this, O2 still warn that the Xperia X10 may run slower once updated than it currently does on Android 2.1. Users of the O2 forum however so far have found the opposite with Quadrant tests showing Android 2.3 almost doubles the results. To update you will need to connect your phone to a PC and use PC Companion to update. You will need to back up your data with an app from the Market as the 2.3 update wipes your data and the Backup and Restore feature found on the X10 has been removed from the 2.3 update.

Rogers Canada have put the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 on the Rogers red hot deals section. Rogers are offering the Xperia X10 on a one year contract for new activations, with the price of the handset only $25.50. Monthly prices are relatively low as well, with the minimum price plan listed as $32.35 a month.

While the Xperia X10 may be last year’s model from Sony Ericsson this is still a cracking price for friends or relatives who are yet to move over to the smartphone or Android world. Head on over to Rogers to take advantage of this offer. It’s only available while stocks last.

Sony Ericsson were a bit premature by releasing information regarding the Android 2.3 update for the Xperia X10 on their website. We saw a message appear saying that the update was now available for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, when in fact it wasn’t. However the release was, as they promised imminent. The release of Android 2.3.3 with Facebook inside Xperia is now rolling out for the X10, for real this time.

Like previous updates from Sony Ericsson, the update is being rolled out in phases, a few European countries have confirmed that the update is available, including the UK. The update is available initially for unbranded handsets and hopefully network providers will also begin rolling out the update but, what networks which will do this is currently unknown unfortunately.

We reported yesterday that Sony Ericsson had released the much awaited Android 2.3 update for the Xperia X10. This information came from reports across the internet as well as the Sony Ericsson website showing that the update was now available. It seems however that this isn’t the case. Sony Ericsson have posted on their blog that the update page on their website was a bit “premature”. The update is still planned for this week but, as of yet the Android 2.3 Xperia X10 update has not began rolling out. This has been clarified by the blog post on the Sony Ericsson website, as well as various statements from Sony Ericsson through their Facebook pages.

Sony Ericsson go on to say that, although the information was a little early, the release of Android 2.3 is imminent and will be out within the time frame previous specified. So we should see the update arrive before Sunday night.

We reported earlier that Sony Ericsson had confirmed that the Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread update would be released this week for unbranded generic handsets. It seems that Sony Ericsson have come through with this announcement and Android 2.3 with Facebook inside Xperia has been released for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.

Initial reports state that the update has been released in the US. However, customers with an AT&T branded handset are not included in this and instead your North American Xperia X10 will need to be unbranded.

The update brings Android up to 2.3 and adds Facebook inside Xperia, which offers various ways to integrate with Facebook, such as liking tracks you’re listening to and your handset and a post being published on your Facebook profile saying that you like a link, which includes the artist or band’s name and track name. The link takes you to the song on TrackID. You will also be able to use your handset as a Wi-Fi hotspot or tether via USB.

Before updating, you will want to back up your data but, not using the Backup and Restore feature on the phone as this will be removed upon completion of the update.

It’s been a long time coming but, the release of Android 2.3 for the Xperia X10 is imminent. Sony Ericsson have confirmed that they will be releasing the Gingerbread update for their first Android powered handset, the Xperia X10 sometime this week. According to a post on their Facebook page, the update is due for Week 30, which is 25th-31st of July.

The update will bring the handset up to the latest version of Android, used on most other Android smartphones already, including the company’s 2011 Xperia models, the Xperia Arc, Play and Neo. This will be the first time that the X10 has been “up to date” as it was launched with an outdated version of Android – 1.6. It was eventually upgraded to 2.1 but, 2.2 was already out and had been for months and 2.3 was already just around the corner.

The update will be for unbranded handsets and will be rolled out to various countries in different stages like the 2.1 update was. The 2.3 update is only for the Xperia X10 and not the X10 Mini or X10 Mini Pro as they don’t have enough RAM to run Gingerbread.

We’ve recently seen a price reduction from Gameloft on their games for the Xperia Play. The offer saw games reduced from £3 down to £1 for a limited time only. That particular offer however, was specific to the Xperia Play, so users with the Arc or the X10 couldn’t make use of this offer. Gameloft have however got another offer on which ends at 23:59 GMT where all HD games are reduced to just £1.

Since the last offer, more games have been added for the Xperia Play. The Xperia Arc also sees games that are not available on the Play such as Gangstar: Miami Vindication HD, H.A.W.X and Hero of Sparta.

Over the weekend Sony Ericsson have begun rolling out an update for the Xperia X10, their first Android powered handset. The update doesn’t bring Android 2.3 to the handset though and instead appears to be a performance upgrade. Users with the update are reporting improved battery life. They are also reporting that general usage of the phone is much smoother than before. Google voice is now available in the browser of the handset as well. As of yet, Sony Ericsson haven’t released an official changelog, so the specific changes are unknown.

The update doesn’t affect the ability to root the handset, so if upgrading you will be able to reroot your handset straight away using Flashtool. The firmware has already been pulled, allowing users who haven’t received the update, to install it on their Xperia X10 also using Flashtool which is available from here.

The update brings the build number up to 2.1.B.0.1 and the baseband up to 2.1.67.

When Sony Ericsson announced that they would be releasing a successor to the Xperia X10 in the form of the Xperia Arc, they also announced around the same time, that there would be no further Android updates for the X10 range of handsets. As could be expected, this caused a lot of uproar as many customers bought their X10 in good faith that the handset would be supported for the length of their contract. This announcement came before the handset was even a year old, so even customers who bought the X10 as soon as it was launched were extremely disappointed with the company.

It’s no surprise to hear that Sony Ericsson got a lot of feedback from customers, some of which was over the top and offensive, while other feedback stated the benefits of upgrading the X10 to 2.2 or 2.3. Thankfully, Sony Ericsson have listened to this feedback and announced that the Xperia X10 will receive an Android update at the end of Q2/early Q3.

The update will take the X10 straight to Android 2.3.3, the highest version of Android currently available. The work that the company have done with 2.3 and their new range of handsets has essentially made 2.3 on the X10 possible. Although there are some consequences in doing so. Most of which however, many will happily live without and have not wanted from the start. In some cases such as Moxier, many users rooted their handset to remove this.

In the place of Moxier, the X10 will use the 2.3 native EAS functionality. Also Mediascape will be replaced by the music player and media experience widgets as found on the next range of Xperia handsets. What won’t be replaced by another app or feature however, is the backup and restore app – although there are many alternatives on the Android market. Smile detection and face recognition will also be removed, instead the X10 will use the standard camera interface of Android.

Unfortunately for X10 Mini, Mini Pro and X8 owners this doesn’t apply however and will remain on Android 2.1. Unless of course Sony Ericsson change their mind on that matter as well.

We previously heard by way of a tipster, that AT&T were to discontinue the Xperia X10, presumably to make way for the Xperia Arc and Xperia Play. At the time however, this wasn’t confirmed but, none the less, left many Xperia X10 owners with AT&T, worried that their handset would not receive the Android 2.1 update which was first released back at the end of October. This has now been further called in to question, as AT&T are no longer selling the Xperia X10. Well not brand new models any way.

The AT&T site shows that only refurbished Xperia X10 models are available, meaning that it seems AT&T are pulling the plug on Sony Ericsson’s first Android powered handset. This also means that the network carrier may not approve or release any further updates provided by Sony Ericsson for the Xperia X10, including the already released Android 2.1 update, not to mention the dual touch update. A petition has been started urging AT&T to honor their upgrade promises with regards to the Android 2.1 upgrade on the X10.
