my girlfriend’s x1 has been showing cracks around the volume control (is that near the stylus holder?). O2 callcentre did not recognise this as a warranty issue (yet). i think it is vital that more people log their problems here to build a body of evidence.

Mine(silver) also has a crack at the corner of battery compartment.
Bought it in December.

I to have a X1 but the only crack I see is near the lense of the camera on the back side. It has a v shape crack in the surounding glass around the camera lense itself but hard to see unless you look hard. I was given a oportunity to return it but it would take me 5 or 6 weeks to get it back and I did not want to wait that long so I decided to live with it the way it was as it has no effect on the phone itself. Other than that, Its a Excellent Phone that I recomment to anyone.

I bought xperia form a Dubai dealer. Now it started showing cracks near the stylus compatment. Sony should call back all the cracked phones to replace

my xperia is 2 months old and just started showing a crack near the lens, would it have killed SE to use better quality material on such an expensive but excellent phone. I’ll be raising this with O2 tomorrow so lets see what happens.
but we should all complain to SE so that they know our concerns.

ok,just an update, have taken mine to o2 for repairs and emailed SE.they have asked me to send it to them but o2 seems an easier option.we all should definately raise this with our network providers and SE.

i have an x1.i complained about it to the service center they said that i will have to buy a new boldy and replace it with that

I have two cracks in my X1, one between camera lens and flash, the other in the chrome ‘belt’ near the stylus. 1 1/2 months old.

I would not recommend getting until SONY Ericsson resolves the casing crack issues. This is true for my silver Xperia has develop crack today (10th April-2009). I bought it in February 2009. The crack is at the corner of battery near to the camera and the volume control button. I have brought it to the the attention of SONY Ericsson, service centre. And I hope that they would acknowledge it, and replace it with a new and different batch. My guess is that they are using a cheap plastic that would not be able to take the stress, thus crack. Couple the heat that has been generated by the battery, it will accelerate and reduce the lifetime of the plactic, ie reduce the allowable stress of the plastic. It seems that Sony Ericsson has decided not to use HTC anymore for the production of Xperia. I think there is quality issue on the Sony Ericsson Xperia models

Just like Vinnie, my crack is also on the belt as well as the battry casing. I am from Asia. I think this problem is also happening to asian users.

I bought a silver Xperia in Dec 2008, the manufacturing date inside the battery compartment says W48. Also have discovered 2 cracks on the same plastic part, not happy about it at all. The cracks appeared a month or two after I bought it, but until I found this website recently I didn’t know there were others with this same problem. The first crack is a hairline-crack going vertically from the top of the camera lens (right between the flash and lens) to the top of the silver-plastic part. The second is right near the volume-control button, the crack creates a little “triangle” of plastic that is now separate from the main plastic part. There definately seems to be a quality problem here. I am now going to call Xperia and find out what they are going to do about this.

Maybe try taking better care of your fone….prevention is better and cheaper than a cure….get a case perhaps?

I have sent my complain to SE service centre and they are laying claim that such crack are subjected to excess forces. They have mentioned that they would give me a discount for the plastic body and request that let them know which service centre I am going to. I am quite furious that they insinuate that I have subjected my phone to excessive force that is why it cracked. They are not admitting that there is a design flaw. And mentioned in Malaysia there has not had any complain so far. And I am the first one. If anyone from Malaysia who has the similar problem lets get together and see what we can do about it collectively.

Jimbo, some people have reported that they have checked a replacement X1 in the shop straight out of the box and it was cracked, how would you prevent that?!

Bought mine in Singapore 1 month back. just discovered the crack near the stylus today. Great phone though!!!

Same here, my Xperia has a crack at the stylus opening to the corner.
Vodafone didn’t respond to this as being a waranty issue.

Hey there, ive mailed sony ericsson about my crack, and they are going to replace my x1i’s cover FOR FREE, it might be a bummer that its cracked, but they are sorting it out, so i suggest mailing them.

I have recently got hold of my xperia black some three months & have had no problems at all. In fact i love it just wish i could get some free software for it…….

Mine too cracked after a week. I opened the back case and inspected the crack near the upper left corner of the battery (volume button). The thing is clear, the plastic back is a frame around the battery, and is very thin in that spot, having a recess like it should accommodate something mounted on the motherboard. Poor design and I don’t think SE will change this (requires a design change on the molding fixture of the back case). The battery contacts (mounted on the motherboard) are very strong and they push the battery also upwards toward the metal cover. The battery also is held in place at the corners by the frame itself. So, in short, the contacts push the frame and create stress precisely in that weak spot. The frame is held by a clip on the lower side, while towards the volume button there is no clip, thus the crack appears exactly where the force stresses the frame. i have seen pictures and all show the crack in the same precise spot. No matter how many times you get the back case changed, the crack will be there in few days. There is a tread on xda-developers site that shows a lot more, and there is a post explaining that you can prevent the crack by reinforcing the frame with A+B resin in that spot (of course the back has to be taken out for this operation), and in case there is already cracked you can fix it.

My phone has started to show cracks too (around the stylus area). And the device is currently (Apr09) under full 100% warranty repair (bought in Dec08). I have an email communication with one of the SE Service Center guys (Holland); he advised me to have it repaired.

I have noticed a crack one the back of my phone, starting near by the power button and finishing inbetween the lense and flash on my camera.

I also have cracks, two on the back side cover of my phone. One on the top and another on the bottom and i never dropped the phone .. Hope my warranty willcover this ..

i bought my Xperia last week and i found a crack in case near the placing of stylus today!!! what i have to do??? do they repair it under warranty or not ?

Silver X1a bought in December in Australia. It has a crack across the bevel around the camera and LED leading down towards the power button. The chrome piece between the front camera and light sensor also has bubbles/blisters on it.

I’ve treated it with the utmost care so this kinda sucks -it’s not covered under warranty by my Telco :(

Well they returned my phone; fully repaired without asking any questions. My X1 now looks brand new!

So; have cracks: have it repaired… my phone was fixed in 14 days.

PS: Not under warranty by your telco DOESN’T MEAN it’s not under warranty by SE !!!

just another update, got mine replaced with a new handset from SE, and Thimster’s right, its not the service provider’s job, but SE’s. this is covered under the warranty and dont let anyone tell you otherwise.

my question is, is this still an issue in the newer handsets with presumably different serial numbers, or has this matter been sorted ???

But im scared of the fact that the case gets cracked.
Is there any specific manufacturing date/week which doesn’t have the record of developing cracks in the case.
So that im check the Handset while buying.

I’ve dropped my xperia once or twice, not full drops

everytime its happen i’ve had my phone between my legs while driving, gotten out my car only for it to drop maybe 1foot from my car door onto the ground

i have 2 cracks on my chasis now

1 just under the power botton which goes into the lense of the camera
and 1 under the back battery cover along the side of the chasis

dare i say, dropping a phone should NOT crack the chasis unless you drop it from a fair height at which, the phone would probably break in more places

it shud be manufacter defects!! i never even drop my phone but the crack is the same as posted by the image near the battery~ damn.

they shud do an exchange 1 to 1 like wat iphone do , instead of telling it’s not cover under warranty. we do not do anything harms to the phone~ anyone dare to raise it up to SE company?

i have baught the x1 silver phone just a week ago and it get cracked in just 2nd day of usege. it is cracked at volume controle side. here all have the same problem with x1. it is still craking whatever the production batch. my phone is of 09w35 batch. i think it is due to low quality plastic use. which do not tollrate the heat genereted by processor . plastic expand on heating so the cracked. it may be case designing fault. because lots of x1 user have similar crack at similar positon.
the main point where xi cracke is
1. near the volume controle
2. inside battry compartment
3. near the stylus.
do not take easy it is the quality issue of sony erricsson. go to the seller or service center and demand new with further assurense or try to get your purchaging price. because if u get new one then that will also crack at the same place and u cant do anything except seeing the crak. afterall one year is in run and sonyericsson do nothinf for it.. in my word phone is the best on performense but worst in hardware quality..

I got exact same crack sent it for repair to SE and they denied warranty on it saying device software it tempered ? are we going to do something abt it at all.

I too found the crack near the battery cover as shown in the picture and exactly of the same shape. My phone has never fell down nor it was hit anytime. I was shocked to see that crack. The sliding key-board, the most attractive thing about this phone, is all flaws….It is an utter disappointment to pay so much and get this stuff……………

This is a sheer disappointment………Maybe no more SE henceforth…

no cracks here..

i believe it was a bit rushed, and neglected some features that not many people discuss about. Everyone knows that almost all new smartphones have web, so why present that primary function at its bear minimum. Scroll up scroll down zoom in zoom out. Actually? which new cellphone doesnt do this? How bout discuss how the text rearranges itsself. Also the texting, very poor review. Why didnt you point out you can use the mic and text along with your voice? Neglected ALOT of different extra essential options

My X1 too has a crack near the earphone jack.. and on top of it When I phone someone, or they phone me, I can hear them speak but they can’t hear me. Does anyone know what might me causing this and how to fix it?

Yeah I’ve had mine for a while now and I also have a few cracks, near the stylus holder and at the top-left corner of the battery compartment… It’s a shame really because this is a simply brilliant phone… It’s stupid out of the box but after an hour or so of customizing it with the friendly folks at xda-developers it becomes the best phone ever… Screw the Iphone and any Android device… Windows Mobile is awesome

Same here. I have had a crack camera flash LED and power button all the way. And one at the bottom of a phone.
